The Rural Medical Response System Partnership:  MRS Regions Working Together to Increase the Capacity to Respond

The Rural Medical Response System Partnership is a collaboration of 66 entities, including 51 hospitals, 13 health departments, emergency management and a federally qualified health center, which recently received a competitive grant from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services for the purpose of enhancing emergency response preparedness in central, northern and western Nebraska. The partnership utilizes four existing medical response systems, which serve 72 counties, as a foundation and will collaborate with the State of Nebraska and the Nebraska Statewide Trauma System.

The grant builds upon and expands the work currently being done by medical response systems and will allow MRS regions to initiate additional activities to further prepare the state for any disaster.

The goals of the Partnership include developing models for providing care at alternative sites when hospitals reach capacity, utilizing medical professional volunteers effectively, integrating emergency preparedness and trauma care capabilities and developing formal partnerships for provision of personnel, supplies and equipment.

The medical response systems involved include the Panhandle Regional Medical Response System, the Rural Regional One Medical Response System, the Tri-Cities Medical Response System and the West Central Medical Response System.

The grant award is for $868,000.  The grant period began September 1, 2007 and related activities will take place through August, 2008.
